Winifred Baker graduated as a mature student with a degree from the University of Kent in Art History and Film Studies.
She has travelled widely in Zimbabwe, Mexico, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indo-China and Japan. These travels inform her work, not just on a pictorial level, but also in a symbolic and mythological level.
Baker says of her work, “I engage in a fusion of symbolism and expressionism, delighting in the use of colour. Often working in mixed media with oil, tissue paper, pastel, collage and metallic paint, I build up texture and mood. Using a collection of symbolic language and images I may have seen or imagined, they reflect my innermost feelings toads the world of the past and present, veiled in an aura of mysticism brought now to the way things are.”
